Two Styles, One Art

Gi vs No-Gi.

01

Gi Jiu Jitsu

Grappling with a traditional uniform, where you can grip your opponent's clothing. The Gi slows the pace and rewards control; its grips let a much smaller player dominate a larger one. It's the technical foundation most world-class players build first.

  • Grip-based control
  • Slower, technical pace
  • Leverage beats strength
  • The foundation

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu

Grappling in shorts and a rashguard, with no clothing to grab. No-Gi is faster, more wrestling-based and slippery, favoring back-takes, guillotines, darce chokes and foot locks. A different rhythm that sharpens a whole new set of skills.

  • Wrestling & scrambles
  • Fast, slippery pace
  • Back-takes & leg locks
  • A new set of skills

The Main Differences

Compare, round by round.

Dress

The Gi

A traditional BJJ Gi: jacket & pants. The fabric is the whole game.

No-Gi

Shorts and a T-shirt or rashguard. Nothing to grab but the body.

Grips

The Gi

Countless grips on collar, sleeve & pants let you steer the fight.

No-Gi

Wrestling grips on neck & joints; opponents slip or power out.

Pace

The Gi

Slower: the Gi's friction controls the tempo and rewards patience.

No-Gi

Faster, slippery and scramble-heavy. The pace rarely lets up.

Strategy

The Gi

Set-ups off the material: lapel chokes, worm guard and spider control.

No-Gi

Back-takes, guillotines, darces & foot locks lead the way.

Rules

The Gi

IBJJF Gi rules don't allow heel hooks, so sub options are tighter.

No-Gi

ADCC, the biggest No-Gi event, does allow them. The game opens up.

The Verdict

Which is "more technical"? Neither, they're simply different. The best advice is the simplest: train both. Build a strong base, then round out your game. That's exactly how we coach it at Peerless.
